Masdar announced multiple new clean energy projects in April 2026 that extend its international reach across Africa, Central Asia and beyond as the Abu Dhabi-based developer builds on its attainment of 65 GW in global capacity. A Reuters report from January noted that Chairman Sultan Al Jaber highlighted the milestone during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week while the firm pursues a target of 100 GW by 2030. Emirates News Agency figures show UAE installed renewable energy capacity has already exceeded 7.7 GW with projects under development set to lift total capacity above 23 GW by 2031 after 117 percent growth between 2022 and 2025.
The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy introduced a Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy at the World Governments Summit in February that establishes flexible frameworks for clean energy generation and storage with particular support for the agricultural sector. Masdar also partnered with Elite Agro to launch the first agricultural photovoltaic project in the MENA region at Al Foah farm in Al Ain which offers a model for integrating solar power into farming operations. These domestic steps complement the Sustainable Digital Services IT Guideline adopted in January that encourages renewable energy use alongside advanced technologies and environmentally sound IT practices.
Internationally Masdar reached financial close on a 300 MW solar photovoltaic plant paired with a 75 MWh battery energy storage system in Uzbekistan as part of investments exceeding $2 billion in the country. The Asian Development Bank signed a $30 million financing package with Masdar for the Guzar project which will help integrate the new capacity into the national grid and advance Uzbekistan’s low-carbon transition. In Angola the developer is building a 150 MW solar plant at Quipungo that is expected to supply electricity to 300,000 homes while creating 2,000 jobs during construction and operation.
Masdar signed a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s RWE Renewables to jointly develop renewable energy and battery storage targeting up to 1 GW of capacity by 2030 while exploring options for further growth through 2035. The company also formed a $2.2 billion 50-50 joint venture with TotalEnergies that will combine their onshore renewable portfolios across nine countries in Asia. According to the Emirates News Agency report these partnerships underscore the UAE’s strategy of leveraging private-sector expertise to scale clean power deployment in emerging markets.
Abu Dhabi-based Global South Utilities meanwhile commissioned a 5 MWp grid-connected solar plant in Berbera in the Horn of Africa to cut diesel dependence and strengthen local energy security. The firm entered an industrial collaboration with China’s Weiheng to localise battery energy storage system manufacturing in Abu Dhabi which supports the UAE’s broader industrial development and supply-chain goals for the Global South. An International Energy Agency assessment found that global renewable electricity capacity is set to more than double by 2030 adding the equivalent of major economies’ current power generation and accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels.
The combined UAE initiatives align with national policies that have driven consistent capacity additions while positioning Masdar as a key player in international energy transitions.
