Yahoo Finance data showed Apple Inc. closing with a market value of roughly $4.94 trillion after its shares advanced more than 1 percent to $336.91. Nvidia Corp.’s valuation stood at $4.75 trillion at the same time. This shift occurred as part of ongoing fluctuations between the two firms for the top position that have occurred multiple times this year.

Apple’s stock has gained more than 22 percent year to date, a performance that has outpaced several other major technology companies. Tesla Inc. shares have declined approximately 30 percent over the same span while Alphabet Inc. has risen only 4 percent, according to Yahoo Finance figures. The disparity underscores a growing investor preference for companies exercising caution in their artificial intelligence investments.

Capital expenditure at Apple has fallen over the past three quarters even as the company introduced Apple Intelligence features across its product lineup. In comparison, Alphabet recently increased its capital spending guidance to bolster artificial intelligence infrastructure while Tesla has ramped up expenditures on autonomous driving and robotics initiatives. Both Alphabet and Tesla experienced share price declines following their latest earnings releases. A Bloomberg report from earlier in July indicated that Apple had briefly overtaken Nvidia with valuations near $4.88 trillion at that time.

Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, attributed Apple’s success to its ability to navigate the current environment effectively. “Once criticized for not spending more on AI, they have been able to avoid some of those capex pitfalls,” Woods said. The strategist noted that the market has increasingly rewarded the company’s measured approach.

Nvidia had held the title of the world’s most valuable company since the middle of 2025 after surpassing Microsoft Corp., multiple market assessments found. The semiconductor producer’s earlier dominance reflected robust demand for its graphics processing units essential to artificial intelligence model development. A Reuters dispatch from mid-July detailed a similar overtake by Apple that saw its valuation reach $4.88 trillion while Nvidia stood at roughly $4.86 trillion.

Apple is scheduled to release its quarterly results on Thursday, marking the final earnings presentation under Tim Cook’s leadership as chief executive before he assumes the role of executive chairman on Sept. 1. John Ternus, a longtime hardware engineering executive, will take over as CEO at that point. Market participants will focus on details regarding the expansion of Apple Intelligence and any signals about future spending plans.

Attention in the coming days will also turn to earnings reports from Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc., all expected to reveal additional commitments to artificial intelligence infrastructure. Such disclosures could further influence valuations across the technology sector. The latest rotation highlights the dynamic nature of market leadership in the industry.
