QatarEnergy secured participating interests in seven exploration blocks in the Ceará Basin as part of the 6th Concession Open Acreage Bid Round conducted by Brazil’s National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels. The blocks, identified as CE-M-471, CE-M-473, CE-M-475, CE-M-477, CE-M-537, CE-M-539 and CE-M-665, are situated along the northeastern Equatorial Margin. QatarEnergy will hold a 30 percent stake with Petrobras acting as operator at 70 percent, according to an announcement from the Qatari company. The awards add new prospective acreage in a frontier region known for its deepwater prospects.
The seven blocks span a combined area of roughly 4,700 square kilometers in water depths ranging from 2,000 to 3,600 meters off Brazil’s northeastern coast. Concession contracts for the licenses are expected to be signed during the first half of 2027 after completion of required procedures. QatarEnergy’s statement on October 8 detailed the outcome of the bid round that took place a day earlier and emphasized the company’s commitment to working with local authorities.
HE Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, said, “We are pleased with the success of these bids, which add prospective acreage to our upstream portfolio in Brazil. I would like to thank our valued partner Petrobras, with whom we worked closely on this partnership, as well as ANP and the Brazilian authorities for their valuable support. We look forward to further strengthening our partnership, and to work with all stakeholders for a successful exploration.” The executive’s comments were included in the official announcement distributed by Qatar News Agency.
QatarEnergy’s latest move builds on its existing Brazilian portfolio that includes a stake in the Sépia field in the Santos Basin pre-salt area and a 20 percent interest in the Água Marinha block in the Campos Basin secured in a 2022 licensing round. Company disclosures from recent years list Brazil among key areas for international upstream growth alongside more than 35 joint ventures worldwide. Data published by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels show sustained interest in both mature and frontier basins through successive open acreage offerings.
The consortium committed to a signature bonus of 28.46 million reais along with a minimum exploratory program that anticipates around 235 million reais in related investments, according to details released following the bid round. Only one of the eight blocks offered in the Ceará Basin during the event failed to attract a bid. ANP records indicate the Equatorial Margin has become a focal point for new licensing as the agency continues to promote exploration across underexplored offshore regions.
Earlier licensing activity, such as the 2022 permanent offer cycle that brought QatarEnergy into the Água Marinha block alongside TotalEnergies and Petronas, has helped the company establish a broader position in Brazilian waters. A review of QatarEnergy’s 2024 reporting highlighted the Latin American country’s role in diversifying its global exploration holdings beyond core liquefied natural gas operations. The Brazilian regulator’s technical maps illustrate how multiple bid rounds since 1998 have progressively expanded contracted exploration areas in basins including Santos, Campos and now the Equatorial Margin.
