The S&P 500 has climbed to fresh records this month, propelled largely by gains in a handful of artificial intelligence-linked technology giants, according to multiple market assessments. Yet this performance masks significant weakness beneath the surface, with roughly 60 per cent of index constituents down more than 20 per cent from their individual peaks, a Financial Post analysis found. Market leadership has narrowed dramatically to a small cohort of AI-related names that now account for more than 40 per cent of the index’s total capitalisation, exceeding levels seen at the height of the dotcom bubble, a Reuters report noted.

Goldman Sachs Research has warned that current equity valuations appear to be outpacing underlying fundamentals, particularly for firms supplying AI infrastructure, with the firm’s analysts pointing to risks that investors are overestimating the longevity of elevated corporate profits. The cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratio for the S&P 500 has climbed to around 41, its highest level since 2000 and approaching the peak recorded in late 1999 just before the technology crash, a Guardian investigation showed. Such metrics suggest prospective real annual returns may fall to about 2.4 per cent, well below long-term averages, according to the same assessment.

A Reuters Breakingviews commentary described the situation as a resurgence of the “Everything Bubble,” noting that US equities have become even more concentrated in a few dominant companies heavily exposed to a single AI narrative. Total on- and off-balance sheet debt for major US tech firms and AI laboratories now exceeds 3 trillion dollars, the piece stated, raising concerns that any slowdown in expected revenue acceleration could destabilise the structure. Bond market volatility has also risen sharply, signalling caution from fixed-income investors who appear less convinced by the equity rally’s sustainability, the Financial Post report added.

Bloomberg Intelligence strategists have indicated through quantitative models that the recent surge in stocks has pushed sentiment into “manic” territory, with only about half of S&P 500 members trading above their 50-day moving averages. The Philadelphia semiconductor index has reached its most overbought reading since the internet bubble, according to the strategists’ observations. This lack of broad participation has historically preceded peaks in the overall index, Ned Davis Research data cited in a Business Insider article showed.

Geopolitical tensions, including intensified conflict in the Middle East, combined with soaring government bond yields and questions over the long-term profitability of AI investments, have compounded the risks, a Guardian analysis determined. Fathom Consulting research referenced in that report estimated that for the multitrillion-dollar AI boom to prove profitable, related sales would need to increase by between 600 billion and 800 billion dollars within two years. The narrow breadth has left the market vulnerable to shifts in sentiment, with 84 per cent of S&P 500 companies trading at least 10 per cent below their all-time highs, a separate Kobeissi Letter analysis found.

Barclays derivatives strategists have highlighted that the Buffett Indicator, which compares total market capitalisation to GDP, has surpassed its previous pandemic-era high, flashing another warning of excessive euphoria, according to a Bloomberg report. While some portfolio managers acknowledge the rally’s strength, they caution that narrowing market participation reduces the margin for error amid elevated long-term interest rates and persistent inflation risks, Nationwide’s chief market strategist Mark Hackett stated. Investors are being urged to monitor these divergences closely as the fourth anniversary of the current bull market passes with uneven participation across equities.
