The Dubai Media Office announced that DEWA won the two most important awards at the Global Good Governance Awards 2020 organised annually by Cambridge IFA in the UK. DEWA received the 3G Leadership Award in the Government Sector while managing director and CEO HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer was honoured as the 3G Personality of the Year for Good Governance and Sustainability. The awards come as DEWA continues to align its practices with the highest international benchmarks for transparency and efficiency in the utility sector.
Al Tayer said that winning these two awards underlines DEWA’s global position as a role model for utilities around the world in terms of good governance. It also highlights that DEWA’s governance model is keeping pace with rapid global changes using four main pillars including trust, accountability, transparency and fair practices, according to the statement. The CEO pointed to the utility’s adherence to guidelines from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the World Bank and the British Standards Institution as key elements of its framework.
“This new world achievement is a result of our commitment to achieve the vision of our wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE; His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for the UAE to be number one globally in all areas,” Al Tayer said. He noted that DEWA’s vision draws from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s emphasis on service quality and citizen satisfaction as the measure of leadership. The executive detailed how the authority has raised the share of clean energy in Dubai’s mix to around 9 percent, exceeding the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 target of 7 percent for 2020.
Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA, stated that the top management is committed to implementing the highest international standards of good governance and full compliance in all areas of the work. “This has led to greater efficiency and productivity for the best global results,” Salman said. He added that the wins underscore the organisation’s regular review of operations and agility in adapting to change while praising the role of employees in achieving these outcomes.
The announcement noted that DEWA previously won the Global Good Governance Excellence in Corporate Governance Award 2019 and the Global Good Governance Best Corporate Governance Reporting Award 2019 from Cambridge IFA. A utilities industry publication reported that DEWA was the first organisation to win two global corporate governance awards from the UK institute. DEWA has also been recognised with the World Finance Corporate Governance Award for the UAE in 2018 and received the British Governance Standard certification for three consecutive years.
Supervised by Cambridge IFA in the UK, the Global Good Governance Awards recognise individuals, government and private organisations and non-profits for excellence in governance. The awards programme has highlighted DEWA’s achievements repeatedly since 2019, the utility’s updates show. In 2022, DEWA announced winning three such awards, building on its earlier successes in corporate governance and sustainability.
