Global EV Demand Grows 9 Percent | AI-Generated Image

The figure was reported by the Emirates News Agency citing preliminary industry tallies that highlight continued momentum in electric vehicle adoption worldwide. This growth rate marks a moderation from the steeper increases seen in prior years even as absolute volumes continue to climb. Sales in the period benefited from an expanding range of available models and enhancements to charging infrastructure in key markets.

International Energy Agency figures show electric car sales exceeded 20 million units globally in 2025, capturing a 25 percent share of the overall new car market. That performance followed a 20 percent increase from 2024 and marked the fifth straight year of annual gains approaching 3.5 million units. The IEA assessment placed the electrified share of the global car fleet at approximately 5 percent, displacing 1.2 million barrels of oil per day.

A BloombergNEF forecast issued in June 2026 anticipates more than 23 million passenger electric vehicles will be sold worldwide this year, representing an 11 percent increase over 2025. The projection sees electric vehicles accounting for 27 percent of global car sales in 2026, more than double the share recorded five years earlier. BloombergNEF data further indicates that emerging markets are contributing a growing proportion of the expansion.

Ember energy analysts reported that more than a quarter of new cars sold globally in 2025 were electric, driven largely by gains in emerging economies. China posted an electric vehicle sales share above 50 percent for the first time that year, the group found. The number of countries achieving more than 10 percent EV sales share rose to 39 in 2025 from just four in 2019.

The electric vehicle fleet consumed 367 terawatt hours of electricity in 2025 and is expected to surpass 2,700 terawatt hours by 2040, according to BloombergNEF projections. Grid investments totaling more than 800 billion dollars will be needed to support that demand growth through 2040. Government support measures more than doubled in absolute terms last year in response to higher sales volumes.

Southeast Asian import duty reliefs accounted for nearly half of the roughly 6 billion dollars in total government support for electric car sales in 2025, an International Energy Agency review determined. Such incentives have helped accelerate uptake in developing regions alongside falling battery costs and model diversification. The combined data point to sustained though uneven expansion of the global electric vehicle market.
