Etihad Airways announced on September 28 that it will operate double daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Sydney starting December 15, increasing from 10 to 14 weekly services in response to rising demand during the Australian summer holiday season. The expansion adds four flights per week and delivers more than 5,000 seats in each direction weekly, with all services using the Airbus A350-1000. The carrier, which began serving Sydney in 2007, framed the step as a permanent enhancement to its Australian network rather than a seasonal adjustment. According to the airline, the additional capacity will also support greater travel to Abu Dhabi itself.

All flights on the route will feature the Airbus A350-1000, which the carrier has progressively introduced on Australian services over the past year as part of its fleet modernisation. The aircraft offers lie-flat Business suites with sliding doors for privacy along with enhanced Economy seating and high-speed Wi-Fi throughout. Etihad also maintains a daily Abu Dhabi-Melbourne service using the Boeing 787-9. The statement from the airline noted that the A350 deployment aligns with growing preference for its premium product on long-haul routes.

The revised schedule provides both morning and evening departures from each city every day of the week, according to details released by Etihad. Flights from Abu Dhabi include a 09:55 departure arriving Sydney at 06:30 the next day and a 21:05 departure arriving at 17:45 the next day. Return services from Sydney depart at 16:50 arriving Abu Dhabi at 00:25 the next day and at 21:30 arriving at 05:00 the next day. These timings create convenient same-day connections in Abu Dhabi to a wide range of onward destinations.

The double daily frequency will strengthen links from Sydney through Abu Dhabi to points across Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, Africa and the Gulf, the airline said in its announcement. Passengers gain same-day connections to cities including London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Geneva, Milan, Rome, Madrid and Barcelona. The expanded schedule also promotes the Abu Dhabi Stopover programme, which provides complimentary hotel stays for one or two nights and now extends to visits in Al Ain. Additional services coincide with December’s Formula 1 weekend at Yas Marina Circuit.

Connectivity for travellers to and from Australia will improve further through Etihad’s interline partnerships, the carrier added. Codeshare and interline agreements with Qantas, Jetstar and Air New Zealand allow seamless onward travel across Australia and to New Zealand. The announcement builds on Etihad’s earlier acceleration of A350 operations to Sydney, which saw the airline transition the route fully to the new aircraft type ahead of the original January 2026 target. That earlier change, reported in late 2025, already increased premium seating capacity by more than 20 percent on the route.

Arik De, chief revenue and commercial officer at Etihad Airways, said the additional service will provide greater flexibility for passengers. “Double daily flights give our guests even greater flexibility when travelling between Australia and Etihad’s growing global network,” he stated. “The additional service strengthens connectivity through Abu Dhabi, creating more seamless access to destinations across the Middle East and Europe, while making it easier for travellers to experience Abu Dhabi and discover everything the emirate has to offer as part of their journey.” The airline indicated that bookings for the new flights are now available on its website and through travel partners.
