Eurostat published provisional data indicating the EU had attained a 26.2% renewable share in gross final energy consumption for 2025. This represented a one percentage point advance on the 2024 figure of 25.2% and a substantial rise from 9.6% when the series started in 2004. The statistical office observed that reaching the revised 42.5% goal by 2030 would demand an average yearly gain of 3.3 percentage points between 2026 and 2030. Sweden maintained its position as the leading EU country with renewables satisfying 65.4% of its gross final energy consumption, drawing mostly on solid biomass along with hydro and wind power according to the Eurostat breakdown.
Finland registered 53.0% and Denmark 48.2%, both leaning on similar mixes that included biomass and wind while the member states with the smallest renewable contributions were Belgium on 14.9%, Slovakia on 16.3% and Ireland on 17.2%, Eurostat figures show. Nearly half of all electricity consumed in the EU came from renewable generation in 2025 as the share climbed to 49.9%, a 2.4 percentage point gain from 2024 and more than triple the 15.9% recorded in 2004. Austria led with 90.8% renewable electricity while Sweden followed at 89.2% and Denmark reached 77.7%, the data placed.
Portugal, Greece and Spain also exceeded 60% in renewable electricity shares, a Eurostat assessment found. Lower electricity shares prevailed in Malta at 11.2%, Czechia at 19.2%, Luxembourg at 23.3%, Slovakia at 24.1% and Cyprus at 27.5%. The heating and cooling sector saw its renewable portion expand to 27.4% in 2025, up 0.7 points on the year before and more than double the 11.7% level from 2004.
This pace aligned closely with the average annual improvement of 0.75 points observed over the full time series, the office noted. Eurostat’s broader renewable energy statistics indicated that the transport sector achieved a renewable share of 11.2% in 2024, the latest available year for that category, with Sweden recording the highest at 26.4%. The revised 2030 target of 42.5% stems from updates to the Renewable Energy Directive that raised ambitions from the previous 32% goal, data from the Eurostat explanation showed.
