The Google study points to a proliferation of competing touchpoints, advertisements and online platforms that have left buyers caught in what it describes as the messy middle of the purchase journey. Emotional triggers often prove more decisive than detailed feature comparisons at this stage. Brands in the Middle East and North Africa must therefore invest in forging deeper customer loyalty to stand out in saturated markets.
Panasonic Middle East and Africa CEO John Hardy concurred that little radical differentiation exists among products currently available. Emotional engagement with consumers has instead emerged as the primary competitive advantage. Hardy added that buyers increasingly demand swift resolutions to their needs without extended deliberations.
“They want you to tell them, this is what I’m going to do to fix it,” Hardy said. The executive expressed cautious optimism for the fiscal year, with Panasonic projecting double-digit growth across its operations. Initial sales collapses in the GCC triggered by geopolitical tensions later extended volatility into African markets.
Steady recovery has followed with week-on-week gains returning in multiple territories, according to Hardy. Evolving demographics, societal shifts and changing social spaces continue to reshape demand patterns. Supply chains face pressure to match this evolution at competitive prices even as logistics costs rise.
The company has prioritised tweaks to promotional strategies over outright price increases to shield consumers from added burdens. “We’re monitoring business data coming from each country weekly,” Hardy said. Internal research cited by the CEO further indicates that Middle Eastern buyers emphasise brand identity and emotional resonance to a greater degree than consumers in other regions.
Google first introduced its messy middle framework in a 2020 global study that has since informed multiple regional updates, including the latest MENA-specific insights. Industry executives have increasingly referenced these behavioural patterns when outlining strategies for the area’s expanding consumer base. Panasonic’s regional forecasts align with broader expectations of sustained demand growth despite external challenges.
