The Qatar Stock Exchange index opened the Sunday session down 1.16 percent, shedding 102.45 points from the previous close to stand at 8,707, Qatar News Agency reported. Industrials sustained the heaviest losses with a 2.48 percent drop while real estate fell 1.65 percent at the open. Banks and financial services eased 0.83 percent, consumer goods and services declined 0.71 percent and transportation slipped 0.22 percent, according to bourse figures. Insurance posted a marginal gain of 0.06 percent and telecommunications held steady with no change.

This opening continues a pattern of declines that saw the index close the prior week at 8,810 points after a 2.17 percent loss, Gulf Times reported on October 15. That weekly drop of 195.44 points marked the fifth consecutive weekly decline for the QSE. Market data from QNB Financial Services show the index has traded within a volatile range in recent weeks, closing as high as 9,851 in early September before sliding lower.

Financial analyst Mubarak al-Tamimi told QNA that the bourse faced notable selling pressure mirroring downturns in global and regional financial markets. Geopolitical tensions both regionally and globally have dampened investor sentiment and prompted a more cautious approach to trading, al-Tamimi added. The analyst noted that the index is approaching critical technical levels, with 8,764 points serving as a pivotal support that if breached could lead toward 8,664 points should selling persist.

Year-to-date figures compiled by countryeconomy.com place the QSE index down more than 17 percent as of mid-October, reflecting sustained pressure on bellwether stocks. The market capitalisation stood at approximately 536 billion riyals at the end of the previous week after contracting 1.91 percent, according to Decypha data. Of the companies traded in the prior week, 41 closed lower while only 12 advanced, highlighting the breadth of the downturn.

Similar opening sessions earlier in the month saw trading volumes reach QR 48 million with nearly 25 million shares changing hands by mid-morning, Zawya reported from October 15 activity. The current trend aligns with a broader correction that has pushed the index below several technical thresholds in September and October. QNB Financial Services assessments have pointed to mixed sector performances, with telecoms and transportation occasionally providing support even as industrials and real estate weighed on the overall index.

The insurance sector’s modest resilience at the open comes after it posted gains in several recent sessions, according to QSE data. Analysts continue to monitor whether liquidity returns to stabilise trading around current support levels or if external factors prolong the correction. Further developments in global markets and regional geopolitics will likely influence the QSE’s trajectory in the coming sessions, al-Tamimi stated.
