The Sharjah Airports Authority announced that Sharjah International Airport welcomed more than 390,000 passengers during the week of August 10 to 16 as the peak summer travel season drew to a close with many families returning ahead of the new academic year. The authority’s figures break down the total into more than 175,000 arrivals, approximately 151,000 departures and more than 66,000 transit passengers. The airport operated 2,350 flights over the period with an even split between arrivals and departures to more than 100 destinations worldwide. Top routes included Cairo, Doha, Dhaka and Amman, the authority reported.
The busiest single day was August 15 when passenger numbers reached 48,859 including 25,251 arrivals and 23,608 departures according to the authority. This weekly performance aligns with earlier projections from the authority in July that anticipated close to three million passengers and 19,000 flight movements across the full July-August period. An integrated operational plan was activated in close coordination with strategic partners to ensure smooth passenger processing and the highest levels of safety and security. The authority stated that continuous performance monitoring formed a key part of maintaining operational readiness.
The summer surge builds on the airport’s strong performance in 2025 when it handled 19.48 million passengers for a 13.9 percent increase over 2024, the Sharjah Airport Authority said in a January 2026 statement. That year also saw aircraft movements rise 8.3 percent to 116,657 while air cargo volumes grew as well. The authority has attributed the consistent growth to route network expansion, increased tourism interest and improved operational capacity at the facility.
With more than 100 destinations now served, Sharjah Airport has solidified its position as the third-largest aviation hub in the United Arab Emirates. The high transit numbers during the peak week highlight its function as an important connection point for international journeys. Officials have pointed to the effectiveness of pre-planned measures in handling the return traffic without major disruptions.
The figures released Tuesday provide a snapshot of sustained demand in the aviation sector as the UAE continues to attract visitors and returning residents. Sharjah Airport Authority Chairman Ali Salim Al Midfa said the 2025 results reflect the success of the airport’s long-term strategy and its commitment to operational excellence. Such weekly records during peak periods are expected to contribute meaningfully toward annual targets.
