The National Bureau of Statistics reported that total profits for industrial enterprises above designated size reached 5.27 trillion yuan in the January-August period. This 15.7 percent expansion eased from the 17.6 percent gain registered in the first seven months of the year. The official data covers companies with annual main-business revenue of at least 20 million yuan and reflects a broader industrial recovery that has sustained double-digit cumulative growth so far in 2026.

Sectoral breakdowns from the National Bureau of Statistics showed mining profits advancing 35.1 percent while manufacturing increased 17.4 percent and utilities fell 12 percent. High-tech manufacturing posted a 54.7 percent profit surge that outpaced the overall figure by 39 percentage points. The computer communications and electronics sector more than doubled its earnings and contributed 62 percent of the total profit growth across all industrial firms according to the statistics office.

In August alone industrial profits grew 4.2 percent year-on-year after an 11.2 percent rise in July the National Bureau of Statistics said. The monthly moderation came against a high base from the previous year and ongoing pressures from subdued domestic demand in certain industries. This latest reading marks the softest pace of the year yet keeps the cumulative trend firmly in positive territory.

The National Bureau of Statistics data indicated that state-holding enterprises saw profits rise 10.3 percent to 1.67 trillion yuan during the eight-month span. Joint-stock companies recorded a 20.4 percent increase while private enterprises gained 10.4 percent. These ownership variations illustrate the uneven nature of the recovery across different segments of Chinese industry.

Earlier National Bureau of Statistics releases showed industrial profits climbing 15.5 percent in the first quarter before accelerating further mid-year on the back of rebounding producer prices and global demand for technology products. Sectors tied to artificial intelligence and electronics have led the gains while areas such as automobile manufacturing experienced profit declines of nearly 20 percent. The pattern points to a two-speed economy where export-oriented and high-tech factories have outperformed consumer-facing operations.

China’s industrial sector has provided resilience as the economy depends on factories and exports to offset soft domestic consumption a Reuters review of the figures concluded. National Bureau of Statistics statistician Yu Weining highlighted persistent challenges including weak demand cash flow strains and external uncertainties from geopolitical tensions. The latest profit data follows a full-year 2025 increase of only 0.6 percent that set a low base for the current expansion.
