Qatar Airways said in a statement that the new direct passenger services between Hamad International Airport and Western Sydney International Airport will commence on December 15, 2027, making Western Sydney the airline’s seventh gateway in Australia alongside existing operations to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra. The route will initially operate three times per week using Boeing 777-300ER aircraft configured with 42 business class seats and 312 economy class seats. Bookings open from December 19, 2026, via the airline’s website and mobile application.
According to the carrier’s announcement, outbound flight QR906 will depart Doha at 01:40 and arrive in Western Sydney at 23:45 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while return flight QR907 will leave Western Sydney at 16:10 and reach Doha at 23:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Passengers on these services will benefit from complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi across all cabins. Qatar Airways stated it intends to progressively increase frequencies to daily operations by the end of 2028.
The Australian government expanded air services agreements with Qatar in May 2026 to permit up to seven weekly flights to the new facility, a move detailed in statements from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts. Western Sydney International Airport, which the Prime Minister’s office confirmed will open to passenger services on October 25, 2026, is projected to handle up to 10 million passengers annually at launch with capacity for further expansion. The airport has already attracted commitments from international carriers including Singapore Airlines for daily services and Air New Zealand for routes to Auckland.
Hamad Al Khater, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, said in the statement, “Our launch at Western Sydney International is the next chapter in our long-standing partnership with Australia, one of our most important markets.” He added, “The new route will link Western Sydney directly with Doha and, through Hamad International Airport, with more than 170 destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and beyond, strengthening existing ties and creating new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment between Australia, Qatar and the wider world.”
The development complements Qatar Airways’ partnership with Virgin Australia, which has included equity participation and operational collaborations that Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics data show have helped sustain connectivity on key routes. International scheduled passenger traffic to and from Australia reached 45.6 million for the year ended July 2026, a 5.3 percent rise from the prior year according to the same official figures. Qatar Airways maintains a significant presence on Middle East corridors, operating alongside major competitors while enhancing its network in response to growing demand.
Western Sydney International forms a key element of efforts to address rising aviation demand in Australia’s largest city, where passenger volumes are forecast to double over the next two decades per government infrastructure assessments. The curfew-free airport supports 24-hour operations particularly suited to freight and long-haul international flights. Its opening follows more than seven years of construction on a site that has already generated over 12,800 jobs, half of them filled by local workers according to departmental reports.
