The Korea Biopharmaceutical Manufacturers Association put the value of biopharmaceutical exports for the first nine months at $6.6 billion, a new high for any comparable period. This figure reflects robust demand for Korean-made biosimilars and innovative therapies across international markets. The association’s assessment found particular strength in shipments to the United States, which emerged as the largest importer of South Korean biopharmaceutical products.

Supporting data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy show that biopharmaceuticals have consistently outperformed many traditional export categories in recent years. The sector’s expansion aligns with South Korea’s broader strategy to position itself as a global leader in advanced pharmaceuticals. Industry investment in research has accelerated the development of new products that meet stringent regulatory standards in major economies.

Global biopharmaceutical trade has expanded steadily, with a PwC analysis projecting the worldwide market to exceed $1 trillion by the end of the decade. South Korea has captured an increasing share of this market through competitive pricing and quality compliance. The country’s export success in this area has helped offset declines in other manufacturing segments, according to central bank statistics.

Officials at the association highlighted the contribution of several blockbuster drugs that received approval in key jurisdictions during the past 12 months. These approvals facilitated wider market access and boosted sales volumes. The trend is expected to continue as additional pipeline products advance through regulatory reviews.

Data from the Korea International Trade Association places the biopharma export growth rate above the overall export average for the period. This performance comes amid heightened global focus on health security and supply chain diversification following the COVID-19 pandemic. South Korean firms have invested heavily in manufacturing capacity to meet rising international orders.

The rise in exports has also stimulated domestic employment in high-tech sectors, a government economic report noted. Training programs for specialized personnel have supported the industry’s scaling efforts. Continued policy support is seen as essential to sustaining this momentum into the full year.
