The major US stock indices delivered quarterly gains for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq even as trading concluded with mixed results on the last day of the period. According to the Emirates News Agency, the session reflected investor reactions to recent economic indicators and Federal Reserve policy expectations. The performance capped a period of overall upward momentum for technology-heavy benchmarks amid hopes for lower interest rates.

Market reports described the action as Wall Street ends mixed; S&P 500, Nasdaq post quarterly gains. The S&P 500 declined marginally in the final session but secured a solid advance for the quarter, a WAM report stated. Nasdaq followed a similar pattern with a small daily drop yet positive quarterly return while the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed a modest daily increase though its quarterly result lagged behind its peers.

Data compiled by Nasdaq Inc. placed the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 42,313.00 after a 0.3 percent rise adding 137.89 points. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite closed at 18,119.59 following a 0.4 percent decline of 70.70 points. The S&P 500 settled at 5,738.17 after slipping 0.1 percent or 7.20 points.

For the quarter the S&P 500 advanced approximately 5.5 percent according to a Wall Street Journal analysis. The Nasdaq Composite also registered gains of around 2.8 percent over the three months. These increases marked the continuation of a strong year for equities supported by robust corporate earnings.

Consumer sentiment data from the University of Michigan indicated a reading of 70.1 for September an improvement from 67.9 in August which provided some support for market sentiment. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s comments on measured rate cuts helped shape investor expectations during the period. Powell indicated that the central bank would likely implement 0.25 percentage point reductions in upcoming meetings if the economy performs as anticipated.

International developments also influenced the quarter with stimulus measures in China leading to significant gains in Asian markets on the final day. The Shanghai Composite surged 8.1 percent in response to new economic support packages. Such regional dynamics contributed to the broader global market context affecting Wall Street performance.

Analysts at various firms noted that improving fundamentals including nearly 14 percent average earnings growth for S&P 500 companies in the second quarter underpinned the positive quarterly results. Bloomberg Intelligence highlighted this earnings beat as exceeding initial estimates of 8.3 percent. The resilience demonstrated across multiple sectors positioned markets for the final quarter of the year.
