Gold showed little movement in early trading on Friday according to data compiled by major exchanges as participants braced for the release of the US nonfarm payrolls report due later in the day. The employment figures are seen as crucial in gauging the strength of the American economy and the likely pace of monetary easing by the Federal Reserve. A robust reading would likely bolster the dollar and push bond yields higher further reducing the appeal of non-yielding assets like bullion. WAM reported that the metal is set to register its second weekly loss in succession reflecting shifts in market sentiment over the past five trading sessions.

Economists surveyed by financial data providers forecast the addition of around 140,000 jobs in September with the unemployment rate holding steady near recent levels. CME Group tools indicate that the probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut at the Fed’s November meeting has fallen below 70 percent in recent days on the back of resilient economic signals. Such developments have weighed on gold which climbed to all-time highs earlier this year but has given back some gains as the US currency strengthened. The upcoming data will also feed into broader assessments of consumer spending and business investment in the final quarter of 2026.

World Gold Council figures show that central banks purchased more than 1,000 tonnes of gold in 2025 helping to underpin prices even as exchange-traded fund holdings experienced net outflows. Investment demand has moderated in recent months according to the council’s quarterly reports while jewellery and technology sectors have provided steady consumption especially across major Asian markets. Geopolitical developments in several regions have nonetheless offered periodic support preventing deeper declines in the spot price.

The US dollar index traded near multi-month highs on Friday according to currency market trackers limiting gains for commodities priced in the American currency. Benchmark 10-year Treasury yields rose above 4.1 percent in the session increasing the opportunity cost of holding gold a Reuters assessment found. These dynamics have contributed to the metal’s weekly performance which saw it shed approximately 0.8 percent through Thursday’s close.

Analysts at leading financial institutions have offered mixed outlooks for the remainder of the year with some citing persistent inflation risks as a reason for long-term bullishness. Others point to the potential for equity markets to draw capital away from safe-haven assets if US growth remains robust. The payrolls release will set the tone for subsequent indicators including producer prices and consumer confidence surveys due in the coming weeks.

Trading volumes in gold futures have remained elevated this week according to exchange data reflecting heightened positioning ahead of the jobs report. Open interest has climbed as hedge funds and institutional investors adjusted exposure in response to evolving rate cut odds. The settlement price for the most active contract will offer an early indication of market reaction once the data crosses the wires later on Friday.
